Dear Students and Families,
On behalf of the staff at Loma Portal Elementary School, I am happy to welcome you to the 2018-2019 school year! We are looking forward to another amazing year here at LPE. I begin this new chapter at Loma Portal with a promise to you, our students and parents, that this will be a year of engaging, meaningful and rigorous work in our classrooms, combined with special events and a great deal of extracurricular activities that will be sure to encourage our Dolphins to be involved and stay connected!
Focusing on the values of Growth Mindset, high expectations, and positivity, the students at Loma Portal have been thriving in an academic setting that is optimal for a high level of achievement and academic and social growth. This year, we are continuing our emphasis on STEAM education. Along with our state of the art computer lab, outdoor STEAM lab, amazing music program, and innovative school garden, we are putting into place a STEAM workshop where our students can create, code, and build in a bright, exciting environment using a variety of building materials including Lego Robotics and TeachEngineering. Our TK and Kindergarten classrooms will be outfitted with new furniture and equipment designed to focus on collaboration and FUN as well!
At Loma Portal, we offer a team of dedicated, goal-oriented, and tech-savvy educators whose vision is centered on creating a positive and nurturing culture through collaboration and encouragement! It should be another great year full of fun and learning!
We also acknowledge how important our families are. We understand that in order to be successful in school, our children need support from both home and school. We know a strong partnership with you will make a great difference in your child’s education! We are partners in your child’s education and share the responsibility for our children’s success and want you to know that we will do our very best to carry out our responsibilities. We ask that you guide and support your child’s learning by ensuring that he/she:
1) Attends school daily and arrives on time, ready for the day’s learning experience
2) Completes all homework assignments given by teachers
3) Reads daily to develop a love for reading and to improve literacy skills
4) Shares school experiences with you so that you are aware of his/her school life
5) Informs you if he/she needs additional support in any area or subject
6) Knows that you expect him/her to succeed in school and go on to college
If you have any questions about the rules and expectations, please feel free to contact me or to discuss them with your child’s teacher. Our updated 2018-19 Parent/ Student Handbook was also emailed to you and is available below. It is very important that you and your child are fully informed regarding standards related to appropriate behavior for a safe and productive school year. Please review this handbook which includes our Home/School Compact. The wonderful LPE staff and I feel privileged to be a part of this school family. We thank you for your support and look forward to working with you!
As usual, our class lists will be posted in front of the Main Office on Aug 24th at 5pm. Please note that all classroom assignments are TENTATIVE for all grades. Our enrollment numbers determine how many teachers we have in each grade level and whether or not Combo classes are necessary.
