Spotlight: Amy Kinseth

As a new addition to the Loma Lines, we will be featuring one of our fabulous, talented staff members each week. Let's kick-start this new feature with our amazing Amy Kinseth, 4th grade teacher. Recently, Mrs. Kinseth was honored by her peers as the Teacher of the Year for Loma Portal. Not only is she well-respected and beloved at our school, but she helps teachers all over the country become better educators. Thank you, Mrs. Kinseth!

1. How long have you been on the staff at Loma Portal?

I've been at LP for 13 years. I taught Kindergarten my first year (2001), and have taught 4th grade mostly ever since.

2. How long have you been a teacher?

I've been teaching for 15 years. I taught third grade at Kennedy Elementary before Loma Portal.

3. What is your favorite thing about our school?

I love the supportive parents at our school. We have such a cool group of parents, and it's amazing to feel so supported. I love our teaching staff as well. I'm super proud to say I work at Loma Portal.

4. Where were you born and raised?

I am a rare San Diego native (in fact, I'm a second generation San Diego native). I grew up in East County, in the Del Cerro neighborhood. I went to Patrick Henry High School. What's really cool is that my husband and I now live in the exact same neighborhood (about 3 blocks from my mom)!

5. What are your hobbies?

About a year and a half ago I started running--which I love. To date I've run in 12 half marathons. I'm also an avid cook, and I love reality competition shows about cooking.  "Top Chef", "Chopped", and "Iron Chef" are some of my favorites. My husband and I love live theatre, and we try to attend as often as we can. When Oscar time comes around, we try to see as many nominated films as possible.

6. What are two items on your bucket list?

I'd love to go to either the Academy Awards in LA or the Tony Awards in New York.  I'd also love to travel and try food all over the world.
