Dear Leopard Families,
With a long summer ahead, I want to provide you with an excellent, easy to use learning resource that we purchased for all students and has been used with great success by our English, history and science teachers. It’s called Newsela and it’s very cool:
Newsela is a fantastic resource to keep students engaged and growing with nonfiction reading over summer. I would suggest students select an article a week to read and learn about something that interests them! All students have access – they just need to sign in with their school google account to access all the features and texts. Students can look through the homepage for the most current news and use the search bar to find articles about a certain topic that interests them. If you and your student want more structure, there is even a Distance Learning section that has daily middle school lessons preselected. There are also sections for Science, Social Studies, and English. Once your student finds a text they want to read, they can change the lexile (reading level) of the text at the top right. All students have a lexile range written in the front of their planner as a starting place. After adjusting the level and reading the texts, students can engage with the activities provided like writing prompts and multiple choice questions on vocab and content.
This information will remain posted on our website during the summer at www.lewis.edu
