La Jolla High School recognizes the importance of the arts in education and takes pride in offering a wide array of arts courses. Students are afforded a myriad of ways to indulge their creativity and satisfy their “Visual and Performing Arts” (VAPA) requirements needed for both high school graduation and UC/CSU admission. Additionally, there are clubs and events which allow and encourage students to explore their creative side.
Visual Arts class offerings include: Art, Ceramics, AP Art History, Photography, and 3-Dimensional Design.
Performing Arts offerings include: String Orchestra, Band, LJHS Polymetrics (our advanced audition only instrumental ensemble), Jazz Ensemble, Theater (Drama) and Technical Theater.
Other Arts classes include Video Production and Computerized Graphic Design.
Arts education at La Jolla High is not confined to the classroom. Students participate in clubs which encompass a variety of creative interests. Student Arts Clubs at La Jolla High include Dance, Drama, Filmmaking, Foreign Film, Hip Hop, and Improv
Music students have the opportunity to extend their performance skills into Marching Band PE class as well (this counts as a PE credit or an elective credit) and perform at several parades throughout the year in front of thousands of spectators.
Students who pass the audition (held every spring) for LJHS Polymetrics have the opportunity to perform at large public events (including December Nights at Balboa Park and Festival Del Sol in Solana Beach) as well as arrange and compose music for the other groups to play.
The Theater department offers several performances annually with shows ranging from uproarious comedy to taut drama and auditions are open to all students. Our award-winning Improv Group performs and competes with other local high schools each spring. The annual AirBand competition, sponsored by the ASB is always a huge success and sells out both performances.
