Patrice Shumaker
Physical Education

I am thrilled to return to teach Physical Education at Grant K-8 this year!  In truth I have been teaching a variety of students in a range of subjects since the last millennium.  ShumakerI earned my undergraduate degree from Holy Cross (in Massachusetts) in 1995, and my teaching credential in 1999 from San Diego State University (SDSU).  I went on to earn a Master’s degree in Curriculum Development and Instruction from SDSU in 2004.  We are a Navy family, so I spent my first 3 years teaching full time 3rd grade and 8th grade English at a Department of Defense school in Ceiba, Puerto Rico.  While there I also became a PADI Dive Master in the crystal-clear waters of the Caribbean Sea.  When I returned to the mainland U.S. I taught for more than 2 years in the Chula Vista Elementary School District.  Around 2003 I started to produce future Grant students, and not long after that our family moved across the Pacific to Yokosuka, Japan. While there I taught English to Japanese children and adults.  When we returned again to the U.S. in 2007, I began what turned out to be more than 8 years teaching Reading and Literature at Southwestern College in Chula Vista.  I enjoyed my time there, but missed working with younger students.  Therefore, I supplemented my Multiple-Subject Teaching Credential, Single-Subject English Credential, and GATE certification with a Physical Education teaching certification and joined Grant K-8 as a full-time PE teacher almost 3 years ago. It feels like I have been preparing for this job all of my life.  I have a passion for athletics, and was a leader on the track and cross-country teams in high school and college.  Now I enjoy running, biking, yoga, and (occasionally) surfing.  Trying to get my three active boys tired has also felt like a full-time job.

Our family has been woven into the fabric of the Grant and Mission Hills community for almost a decade.  Our family lived in Mission Hills for more than 9 years, and I raised a “Grant lifer” as well as 2 other Grant K-8 students. In addition to teaching at Grant I have served on the Planning Committee for all of the Mission Hills 5K fundraising events, and have been highly involved in the creation and sustenance of Grant’s first middle school cross-country team and as organizer for all interscholastic cross country meets.   I am very proud to be a part of the Grant community in Mission Hills.  I believe physical fitness is a critical complement to a healthy lifestyle and academic achievement.  Thanks for giving me the privilege of being your coach for the 2019/2020 school year.
