I am thrilled to join the Grant teaching staff this year! The truth is I have been teaching in a variety of capacities since the last millennium. I earned my undergraduate degree from Holy Cross (in Massachusetts) in 1995, and my teaching credential in 1999 from San Diego State University. I went on to earn a Masters degree in Curriculum Development and Instruction in 2004. We are a Navy family, so I spent my first three years teaching full time 3rd grade and 8th grade English at a Department of Defense school in Ceiba, Puerto Rico. While there I also became a PADI Dive Master in the crystal clear waters of the Caribbean Sea. When I returned to the mainland U.S. I taught for more than two years in the Chula Vista Elementary School District. Around 2003 I started to produce future Grant students, and not long after that the family moved to Yokosuka, Japan. While there I taught English to both children and adults. When we returned again to the U.S. in 2007, I began what turned out to be more than eight years teaching Reading and Literature at Southwestern College in Chula Vista. I enjoyed my time there, but missed working with younger students. Therefore on my days off from Southwestern I began working as a substitute teacher and a part-time Physical Education teacher at Grant. I also earned by GATE certification and initiated my Physical Education teaching certification during this time. This will be my first year teaching full-time Physical Education, but it feels like I have been preparing for this job all of my life. I have a passion for athletics, and was a leader on the track and cross-country teams in high school and college. Now I enjoy running, biking, and (occasionally) surfing. Trying to get my three boys tired has also felt like a full-time job. I have been on the planning committee for both of the Mission Hills 5K fundraising events, and am currently working with Eric Karpinski and Coach K to start Grant’s first middle school cross- country team. This will also be Grant’s first interscholastic athletic program. Our family has lived in Mission Hills for more than eight years, and I am very proud to be a part of the Grant community. Thanks for giving me the privilege of being your coach for the 2017/2018 school year.
