AVID: What is it?
AVID is an acronym for Advancement Via Individual Determination.
The mission of AVID is to ensure that ALL students, and most especially the least served students who are in the middle:
Will succeed in rigorous curriculum;
Will complete a rigorous middle and high school college prep path;
Will enter mainstream activities of the school;
Will increase their enrollment in four-year colleges;
Will become educated and responsible participants and leaders in a democratic society.

Farb Middle School is proud to be San Diego Unified School District’s only AVID National Demonstration School. AVID is a program that promotes a college-going culture with an emphasis on a rigorous curriculum with support. At Farb, students accept responsibility for their own learning through the development of organizational skills, collaboration with peers, and participation in strategies to help them acquire deeper knowledge and understanding. Trained teachers incorporate specific AVID strategies into their curriculum in order to support ALL students.
