Meet Mrs. Israel, the Principal
Our hard-working Principal, Mrs. Barbara Israel, has been educating students throughout the San Diego Unified School District for more than two decades. She began her teaching career as a first grade teacher and went on to eventually teach all grades K-6 at eight different sites. She served as a literacy resource teacher and teacher leader for several years while training other teachers in Reading Recovery, literacy interventions and English language development. Her passion for teaching is having the ability to work closely with staff, students and their families. This is her eigth year serving as an administrator. Prior to her Principalship at Ericson, she was the Vice Principal at Miller Elementary for 4 years and served as Program Manager of the Elementary Literacy Department in the district's Central Office the preceding year.
Growing up in Southern California, she attended San Diego State University, where she obtained her B.A., teaching credential, master's degree and reading specialist credential. She went on to earn her administrative credential at University of San Diego. She is married and has two grown sons who continue to keep her up to date with technology. Her special interests include gardening, reading, and walking the beach.
Being able to combine her experience as a teacher, a leader, and a mother makes her a dynamic Principal. You can see her walking around the school campus greeting everyone in her path with a warm smile and embracing students with hugs. Her commitment and passion for student learning has resulted in raised self-esteem and a positive learning environment for students and staff here at Ericson Elementary School.
