Dear Room 210 Families,
Welcome to Kindergarten at E. B. Scripps!
I’m looking forward to a terrific year with your child in room 210. I was able to meet most of you at Back to School Night and Orientation, but just in case I missed someone I thought I would let you know a little about myself since we’ll be spending so much time together this year. My name is Mrs. Cherin Aguilar. My husband John and I have three children. Our oldest son, Nick, is an 9th grader at Scripps Ranch High School, our son, Jake is a 6th grader at Marshall Middle School, and we have a daughter, Addie, who is four. We have lived here in Scripps Ranch for thirteen years and love it! We also have one Labrador Retriever named Marley.
I came to EBS in 2002, as a First grade teacher, after teaching at Hamilton Elementary for 5 years (1st & 2nd). I taught first grade for 3 years at EBS before switching to Kindergarten. I have loved both grade levels! EBS is a great place to be for both teachers and students. I’m sure your child will find much success here in our penguin colony.
Below is a bit of information about my policies, procedures, and expectations to help you settle into our school year:
Due to safety concerns, kindergarten students need to be released to a designated adult or older sibling every day. On M, T, W, & F, they will be dismissed at 3:15 pm from our exterior classroom door. All students will be dismissed at 12:30 pm on Thursdays. Please let me know in advance whom you will be sending in your place if you are unable to pick up your child. Please make sure the person picking up your child in your absence is listed on your enrollment card as “OK to release your child to” and that they arrive with a photo ID. Also, children are not to play on the kindergarten play structures or equipment before or after school. Your support in enforcing this rule to both students and siblings is greatly appreciated. Please note that on rainy days, students will enter the classroom and dismiss from the interior classroom door, via the hallway.
Snack & Lunch
Your child will be given time for a nutrition break and lunch every day. Your provision of a healthy snack (fruit, vegetables, cereal, cheese & crackers, etc.) will help give your child the energy boost needed for his/her activities. Due to the ant problem please send snacks in Ziplocs, Tupperware, or sealed packages. Also, please pack snacks and lunches in separate bags/containers labeled “snack” and “lunch” with your child’s name on both. It is a good idea to have your child practice opening their containers at home, so they don’t have to wait for help. Students can purchase snack and lunch from the cafeteria, daily. Snack is $1.00 and Lunch is $2.25. Please have your child practice imputing their PIN # on the practice sheet at home and memorize their number before purchasing from the cafeteria.
P.E. & Run Club
Your child will participate in PE or Run Club every Monday afternoon from 2:30 – 3:00 pm. Please help him/her to remember to wear comfortable clothes and shoes that will permit movement. Boots, Crocs, and slip-on shoes are not recommended on PE/Run Club days. Hats and sunscreen are also recommended.
Kindergarten required homework will consist of participating in daily home reading for a minimum of 20 minutes every day, including weekends. Additional homework activities will be sent home on occasion that will include handwriting practice and math review.
My classroom volunteer program will begin towards the end of September/beginning of October. I really enjoy working with all the volunteers and look forward to your help and involvement. In preparation for volunteering, please fill out a volunteer information packet from the office and schedule a TB skin test with your doctor. I highly recommend that both parents get cleared. All parents/grandparents, etc… need clearance for participation in class parties, birthday celebrations, field trips, etc. To volunteer for a class field trip, you will need to obtain a Category D clearance, which means you have been fingerprinted by our school police. Volunteer packets can be picked up from the health office. I will also send home a volunteer interest information sheet, for volunteering in the classroom, towards the end of September.
Our class will visit the school library every other Wednesday right before lunch, from 12:30 – 12:45 pm. Your child will be able to check out 1-2 books each visit. For most, these books will not be books that they can read independently, but books that you can read to them. I do ask that library books be returned back to school each day in your child’s take-home book bag They can be taken home again each night if your child is not finished reading it with you. This really helps to reduce lost library books and your child’s book is always at school when it is our library day to select a new one!
You can always contact me by note, email, or phone if you don’t get a chance to talk to me in person. When you call the school, my extension is x4210. Your call will ring directly to the classroom. I do have the ringer on during school hours in case of an emergency, however please try not to call during class time if it’s not an emergency. You can call any time before and after school hours. I will check my phone messages at the end of each school day. I do check my email throughout the day.
Phone number: (858) 693-8593 ext. 4210
I can’t wait to get to know you and your child. I am looking forward to having a great year together!
