Dear 4th Grade Families,
I would like to take this opportunity to welcome you to your new classroom!  We have a very busy and exciting year ahead of us.  I am dedicated to giving your child the finest education possible and this is best achieved when teachers, parents, and students work together.  Therefore, please take a few minutes to read this letter and become familiar with our program.
Homework will be assigned nightly.  It is designed to reinforce/enrich the skills taught in the classroom and is explained to the children prior to being sent home. Students will be given a weekly assignment planner to keep track of their homework.  On Fridays, they will receive a weekly grade.  Students are then responsible for bringing the planner home and returning it Monday with a parent signature. The work should take approximately 30 minutes a day, however each child’s pace may vary.  In addition, students are expected to read a minimum of 30 minutes a day.  If your child is spending an unusual length of time on any task please notify me and we can make an adjustment.  I encourage the students to work independently, but it is also important for parents to supervise by providing a good working environment and consistent time of day.
To ensure a pleasant and nurturing learning environment for every student and to maximize the instructional time, each student is expected to observe appropriate school behaviors.  As our classroom community builds we will be establishing classroom agreements to encourage desired citizenship.  A copy of these agreements will be sent home shortly.
Back to School Night will be held this Thursday, August 30th.  At this time, the Fourth Grade Team will share information about our program, curriculum, classroom activities, and our goals for the year.  I welcome parent volunteers and will be soliciting your assistance with a sign-up sheet at Back to School Night.
I look forward to working with you.  Communication is most important, so please feel free to contact me with questions, concerns or ideas you might have.  Informational letters and e-mails will be sent home periodically to keep you informed of our classroom activities.
Please complete the attached sheet with both student and parent information and return it to school with your child.  If there is something specific that you would like me to know about your child, please include that on the sheet.
Thank you in advance for your support.  I know it is going to be a great year!

                                                                             Sincerely,
                                                                             Mrs. Gretchen Casey Nakanishi
