Tutoring & Academic Workshop

We're Here To Help

East Village High School is an early college with high academic expectations for students in their high school classes. Not only do we want to provide the best education, we want to prepare students to be successful in the San Diego City College classes they take, while they are still in high school. But we don’t ask students to do this alone. Along with high expectations, we give them high levels of support, including small classes and before and after school tutoring by their teachers and City College tutors.

This year, we added an additional academic intervention. For students who are struggling or falling behind classes, it is mandatory that they attend either tutoring or academic workshop after or before school. If a struggling student refuses to attend required tutoring or academic workshop so that he or she can improve their grades and be ready for college classes, we will have to begin a conversation about the student returning to his school of residence at the end of the school year.

Tutoring is available after school on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday from 3:45-4:45 and by appointment before or after school. Teachers may require students who are falling below a “C” in their classes to go to tutoring until they bring up their grades.

Academic Workshop is held Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursday from 3:45 to 4:45 for students who are not turning in homework, are chronically tardy or absent and, as a result, are falling behind in a class. The purpose of academic workshop is to provide students a quiet place (with wifi) to study and catch up. Students may also attend tutoring during this time in lieu of Academic Workshop, with the approval of the assigning teacher. Teachers assign students to academic workshop, and once a student is caught up, determine that academic workshop is no longer required.
