Dana Passes District Drinking Water Review

June 8, 2017

Dear Parents/Guardians:

As part of San Diego Unified’s commitment to provide safe and quality schools in all neighborhoods, the district has partnered with the City of San Diego, the district’s water provider, to take advantage of a new state action allowing school districts to request that samples of water be tested for lead contamination at its schools. San Diego Unified submitted a request to the city in February 2017 to sample water at all district schools. Water sampling at San Diego Unified began on April 4 and is currently underway.

Following strict protocols established by the State Water Resources Control Board, city staff drew up to five water samples at our school.

I am pleased to inform you the results from Dana show our water does NOT contain levels of lead outside the allowable levels set by environmental agencies (State Water Resources Control Board via the Department of Drinking Water and the Environmental Protection Agency). Testing also shows there is no need for further mitigation. Detailed results of the testing are available on the district website at https://www.sandiegounified.org/watersampling.

While results at Dana are below the action level, we will continue to implement the drinking water flushing protocol as a proactive measure. This measure includes flushing all drinking water fountains and faucets on campus for a minimum of one minute prior to first use. City staff will continue to take water samples from all remaining district schools and schools operating on district property using a geographic system to conduct the tests more expeditiously and efficiently. Fountains and faucets scheduled to be sampled will be tagged by safety office staff the evening before sampling occurs and should not be flushed on the day of sampling until after the sampling is complete. Water sampling is expected to be completed before the end of the traditional school year in mid-June.
