Suzuki Violin Program

 Teacher playing

Meet Steve Luchs

I received my Suzuki training at Southern Illinois University with a Masters Degree in Violin Performance.  I was fortunate to be a graduate teaching assistant for two years with Professor John Kendall, world renowned violinist and teacher who was the first American to study with Dr. Suzuki.

After coming to San Diego 40 years ago, I joined the San Diego Symphony and San Diego Chamber Orchestra.  Since becoming a full time teacher, both in the schools and in my private studio, I've continued performing as a freelance musician.  It has been fun performing with some well known artists.  A few examples are Tony Bennett, Burt Bacharach, Moody Blues, Izaak Stern, Itzaak Perlman.  I played with Smokey Robinson for 20 years.

It has been a challenging and rewarding experience teaching at CPJMA.  I am in my 11th year here and I am excited to see the music program blossom in becoming a model for other schools.  CPJMA has gotten recognition throughout the country  for our innovation! One of the most exciting thing we do, is performing with Classics 4 Kids at the Balboa Theatre.

The inventor of the Suzuki method, Shin’ichi Suzuki, explained his philosophy:  "I want to make good citizens. If a child hears fine music from the day of his birth and learns to play it himself, he develops sensitivity, discipline and endurance. He gets a beautiful heart." The Suzuki principals include an early beginning of listening, loving encouragement, parental support, constant repetition, learning with other children, and then learning to read. Because all children learn and master their own language, Suzuki believed all children could learn and master music in the same way.

My advice for violin students and parents- don't miss class, pay attention, and PRACTICE, PRACTICE, PRACTICE.

2018-19 Schedule

Note: Parent of students who are in TK, Kinder, and 1st grade, interested in the violin program MUST take lessons with their children the first year of the beginner program. After the first year, continuing onto their second year; parents do not have to take lessons again.
