Gifted and Talented Education (GATE)
The GATE program supports high-achieving and underachieving pupils who are identified as gifted and talented. By state definition, gifted students are pupils who possess a capacity for excellence far beyond that of their chronological peers. This capacity includes many and varied characteristics that require modifications of curriculum and instruction. These modifications form the basis of gifted and talented educational services.

Cluster classes consist of students who have tested as GATE identified (using the Raven test) and students who are high performing who have teacher recommendations. These classes are capped with a 36 student average and follow the district's type B model.Seminar classes consist only of students who have scored in the top1% on the Raven. Seminar classes are capped at 30 students.
While GATE identified students are enrolled in Math and Science courses, Correia's GATE course designation refers only to the Humanities (English and history) classes.
Curriculum Differentiation. The Correia program focuses on thematic units, problem-based learning, Socratic seminar, curriculum compacting, and depth & complexity icons to add depth and breadth to GATE curriculum. The use of such strategies encourages open-ended lessons and exploratory learning.
The GATE department provides funding to enrich the education of GATE/Seminar identified students. Enrichment activities will include:
- Optimist Club Oratorical Competition
- Spelling Bee
- Future Problem Solvers Program
- "We the People..."
- Greater San Diego Science Fair
- Guest Speakers
- Field Trips
The GATE/Seminar team consists of English and History teachers who have completed or are enrolled in the San Diego Unified School District's GATE teacher certification training. In addition to completing the certification process, Seminar teachers have been teaching GATE for a minimum of three years.
