The counselors at Challenger Middle School want to help keep our teens, families, and community safe. Suicide is the #2 cause of non-natural deaths for children ages 10-14 in San Diego. Students in seventh grade will learn how more about how to help themselves and others during suicide and self-harm prevention presentations on November 14 during their science class. A parent letter has been sent home regarding the presentations. The Yellow Ribbon Suicide Prevention Program is a nation-wide effort to educate, inform, and promote suicide prevention.
Myth - talking about suicide increases the chances someone will take their life.
Truth - talking about suicide can relieve emotional pain and encourage help seeking behavior.
The presentation will include the following information:
• Warning signs - personality change, withdrawing/isolating, reckless behavior
• Risk factors - depression, drug/alcohol use, relationship stress, bullying
• AND Protective factors - social connectedness, cultural or religious beliefs
• Where and when to ask for help
If you have any questions, please contact the 7th grade counselor, Ms. Sally Tom at firstname.lastname@example.org or 858-586-7001, extension 2213.
