Every year, Challenger Middle School honors the seven astronauts who perished in the space shuttle Challenger accident on January 28, 1986. The rubber O-ring on one of the solid rocket boosters did not seal properly due to the cold weather on the morning of the launch. Gases leaked causing a fire which led to the break up of the shuttle 73 seconds after launch. The crew including the first teacher in space, Christa McAuliffe. Challenger families are invited to our memorial ceremony which will take place on Monday, January 29, 2018 from 1:15-1:55 PM in the Shuttle Court. Challenger and Mira Mesa High School students will recite poetry, perform music, and demonstrate AFJROTC routines.
