San Diego Unified participates in the National School Lunch and Breakfast Programs. As these are federally subsidized programs, your student may be eligible to receive free or reduced-price meals. Students who qualify receive a free nutritious breakfast and lunch every day. In addition to helping families provide well-balanced meals to their students, the district receives additional federal money to support students based on the number of students who qualify for the progam. At Challenger, this money is used for various items that includes having the library open after school for student use and to pay for part of an additional counseling position. The district has asked schools to encourage all families to apply for the meal program whether or not the family believes they qualify or if the student will partake of the meals. The chances are that more people qualify than not and the additional money the district receives is directed toward improving student achievement.
The application must be completed each year. Last year's program status expires on October 10. Please make sure you have applied again this year if you would like your student to qualify for this school year. The link to the online application is listed below and paper applications are available in the school office.
