The SDUSD Food Services and Nutrition Department is pleased to announce the 4th Annual Kids Create Recipe Contest. All district students grades K-12 are encouraged to put on their chef’s thinking caps and create a delicious recipe that may be featured on their school menu next year. Additional prizes for first, second and third place winners include Amazon Fire tablets and Amazon gift cards. Entries are due by May 25, 2017.
This year, we are asking for K-5th graders to create a Meatless Monday entrée – a lunch dish that includes a grain component and a protein component, but no meat allowed!
Students in grades 6-12 are asked to Build a Better Burger – take your basic whole-grain bun and beef patty and build it up with your unique flavors and toppings.
The key to this competition is to follow the directions on the entry form, and keep the goal of a school meal in mind – less is more for our kitchens, and healthy and fresh is always best. Prizes for each level are 1st Place: An Amazon Fire Tablet, 2nd Place: $40 Amazon gift card, and 3rd Place: $25 Amazon gift card.
Students can download and print the entry form online at www.sandiegounified.org/food, or they can pick up a copy from your school café or front office.
Students can return completed entry forms by email to firstname.lastname@example.org; by mail to San Diego Unified Food & Nutrition Services, 6735 Gifford Way, Room 5 San Diego, CA 92111; or to your school café staff no later than Monday, May 25, 2017.
At Challenger, students have won at different levels of this contest since it's inception. Mrs. Hight's Consumer Family Studies (CFS) students have created some very tasty dishes. Last year's winning recipe, Eggelent Bowl, created by Toni Anne Salamanca and Emily Ngov, has been featured on the breakfast menu all year. We are cheering on our CFS students this year to make another winning recipe!
