In February, Challenger will host a school-wide spelling bee for grades 6, 7, and 8 after English teachers hold classroom spelling bees. The school-wide champion will be entered to compete in U-T San Diego Countywide Spelling Bee. In turn, the winner of the U-T San Diego Countywide Spelling Bee will be entered into Scripps National Spelling Bee in Washington, D.C.
Due to the rules of the San Diego spelling bee, only 7th or 8th grade students will be able to go forward and represent Challenger at the county level. If a sixth 6th grader wins, he/she will remain the Challenger Spelling Bee Champion.
