Parent and Community Involvement

Murals and childrenWe invite all our parents and community members to connect with the school by attending a variety of events each semester:

Family Fridays are held each month, with Parents invited to come read with their child in class, and then attend a brief informational presentation given by our English Learner Support Teacher, Teri Ponder.

Evening parent meetings are scheduled each month, and parents are invited by flyer and phone calls home in all three main languages. The school provides translation services for all evening parent meetings in Vietnamese and Spanish.

Carson leadership and staff encourage parents to participate in such leadership opportunities at the school as the School Site Council (SSC), the Site Governance Team (SGT), the English Learner Advisory Committee (ELAC) and the Program Improvement Leadership Team. Please contact the main office if you would like to attend a meeting, or join one of our committees. All are welcome.

Research shows that when parents are actively involved with their children's education, students' grades are higher, their self-esteem is greater, and they are more socially adjusted. In fact, the most accurate indicator of a student's academic success in school is not tied to family income or social status, but the extent to which a family:

  • Creates a home environment that encourages learning.

  • Sets high but realistic achievement and career expectations.

  • Becomes involved in their child's education and in the community.

In addition to attending parent-teacher conferences and other special events, opportunities to get involved at your child's school abound. A few examples include:

  • Tutoring

  • Mentoring

  • Classroom read alouds

  • Classroom assistance

  • Non-classroom assistance (field trips, media center, etc.)

  • Organization involvement (PTA, foundation, School Site Council, etc.)

  • Before-and after-school programs
