GATE (Gifted & Talented Education)
Cabrillo Elementary is one of four schools in the San Diego Unified School District that offers a GATE (Gifted & Talented Education) Nurturing Program. All of our students are taught critical thinking skills using GATE concepts and utilizing GATE icons starting in Kindergarten. Once you are aware of the GATE icons, as you walk through the classrooms you will see evidence of GATE concepts and teaching strategies being used in all grades.
Fourth Grade teacher, Leslie Snow, says that she uses GATE methods in teaching her entire class stating, "It's just such a great teaching strategy." The SDUSD tests all Second Grade students for eligibility into the GATE program and formal instruction in GATE begins in Third Grade. Students who test into the GATE program receive additional instruction, but all of Cabrillo' students benefit from exposure to GATE.
All of our teachers are GATE certified and Cabrillo houses the cluster GATE Training facility on our campus. The Teachers at Cabrillo are committed to provide a rigorous program to include the following:
Skills for Thinking In Depth
- Language of Discipline (Big Ideas & Trends)
- Unanswered Questions (Rules & Ethics)
Skills for Thinking Complexly
- Point of View
- Changes Over Time
- Across the Disciplines
These concepts are at the core of gifted education. Every child will benefit from exposure to these ideas as they are integrated into a variety of teaching strategies. For more information on GATE Nurturing, see your child's teacher, our Resource & Testing Specialist Skye Oluwa or Principal Suarez.
