Reading Expectations

Reading Levels

Teachers assess the reading level of students in grades K-2 using differently leveled texts, each level representing a range of difficulty. In grades 3-5, leveled texts are also used, but the emphasis at this point becomes whether the students can read a variety of text types at each level.

Students in the primary grades will bring home leveled books that they should be able to read aloud to a parent with little help, but they will also bring home more complex texts, such as a storybook, which the adult will need to read to them. Usually the reading level is marked on the book, and the teacher will be able to provide information about the range of levels for each grade level.
