Bay Park is delighted to be able to bring a unique learning experience to our 5th graders called BizTown! The McGrath Family Junior Achievement BizTown is a 10,000 square foot mini-city in which kids discover how free enterprise really works. There are 19 life-size businesses, a non-profit organization and a city hall. Every day, 150 new students become business owners, make financial decisions, explore philanthropy and pay taxes.

Teachers spend four weeks teaching the Junior Achievement BizTown curriculum. Students learn principles like economics, good citizenship, and money management. Each business offers the students the opportunity to work as CEO, CFO, or a business specific job. Students apply for the job that interests them. Once they are assigned to a job, students spend time with the other employees in their business to develop their business operating budget, apply for a bank loan, create advertising, and develop their marketing strategies.

After the curriculum has been taught, the students come to BizTown and become "grown-ups" for one day to put into practice all of the principles they have been learning in the classroom. At BizTown, the students are in charge!! Students work in a life-sized interactive city that is designed to reflect San Diego in the businesses, landscape, and architecture. In front of City Hall, the mayor gives a speech reminding the citizens of the laws of BizTown, and encouraging everyone to exercise their civic duty by voting. Students check the business break schedule to know when they are allowed to leave work, visit the bank, and become a consumer in the city.

Our students leave BizTown feeling personally successful after spending the day working hard at their jobs. They also leave with a greater understanding of the value of a dollar, the importance of team work, and how to be a contributing citizen in the community. The time spent at The McGrath Family JA BizTown is only one day, but the impact that this experiential learning has will last a life time!

Student testimonials

"My trip to BizTown was probably the best experience of my life as an adult!
Thank you for teaching us the job of adults. I learned at JA BizTown that
parents work very hard because I was very tired after and that was half a
day. I also learned a life lesson and that is spend your money wise because
it is harder to get money than to spend it.." 5th grader from Mrs. Ioannides

"I learned so much like writing checks, learning how to be a director at
NBC, and having fun! The most important thing I learned to be very
responsible." 5th grader Mr. Wade (Megan)

"I worked at Channel 933, and I learned that my parents work really hard. I
only worked for four and a half hours. That's about half of what my parents
work. So I would like to say thank you so much. " 5th grader (Daniel)

"I just got back from BizTown and I loved it. I learned how to write checks
and deposit tickets. Thank you so much for helping me learn how to do stuff
I will do when I am an adult." (Skyelar)

"I worked at SDG &E and had a good time. My team and I worked hard to make
our company work. ..Thank you for giving us the opportunity to go to the
only one in California." (Hugo)

"Thank you for everything at BizTown. I had a good time. I loved the stores
over there like Sun Diego, Jack in the Box, Best Buy and Sea World." (Perry)

"Thank you so much for making BizTown possible to give me an education for
my finances so I don't wind up 30,000.00 dollars in debt. I learned why my
parents can't get everything that I want them too." (Hannah)

"I am speechless. That was the best day ever. Even better doing real life
work. It's very important to have teamwork in your business or your business
will be hard to operate." (Luke)

"The experience was awesome and I loved it!" (Malakai)
