Welcome to the San Diego Unified School District. I hope you’ll take a few minutes to learn more about our district, which every day prepares more than 130,000 students to take their place as the next generation of San Diego leaders.
Ours is a very diverse district, not only in its ethnic makeup, but the programs offered at our schools. Our schools are some of the finest in the nation, with individual schools receiving high scores on national and state tests, as well as numerous awards. Every day, our students walk a few blocks to their school, just as students have done in San Diego Unified School District since 1854.
Innovative programs are a hallmark of our district. For example, STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics), specialized language, music and other programs run from elementary through high school. The consistency in programs from grade to grade is something that’s being emulated nationally.
We work constantly to have a quality school in every neighborhood. Our schools have among the best technology in the nation, with many students using netbooks and tablet computers. Our voter-supported Proposition S program is upgrading our schools every day with new and refurbished facilities, new technology and other improvements. Visit your neighborhood school; many have tours scheduled every month.
San Diego Unified also has award-winning magnet and special-program schools. Neighborhood Schools and Enrollment Options can help you select the right school for your child.
Recognition is also important. Our district ranks at or near the top of most measures of other large districts in California, and among the top of large school districts around the nation. We have Title I Academic Achievement schools, schools on the "Best Of" lists by magazines and websites, and schools recognized by the state and federal education departments. We're proud of our achievements.
I hope you’ll take a look at our schools. Every day, our teachers, principals, school staff members and everyone at San Diego Unified works to do the best for your child.
