NBC 7 Tours Grant K-8's Gecko Garden & Outdoor Science Lab

Posted: Monday, May 15th 2017

This year Grant K-8’s gecko garden & outdoor science lab was the first stop on the 19th annual Mission Hills Garden Walk tour and NBC 7's Elena Gomez stopped by to get a preview. Grant’s garden is certified organic and serves the students as an outdoor science lab. Saturday's garden walk was a community event that helped raise money for the garden's renovation.

The Gecko Garden Life Sciences & Health program allows all students to explore horticulture and is an extension of the Full Option Science System (FOSS) life sciences curriculums. With the help of the science lab resources, students participate in a school-wide project that connects them with their environment and promotes good nutrition. The Gecko Garden, with support from several local sources, including the Mission Hills Garden Club, also serves to promote the school as an integral component within the community and supplies produce to local businesses for special school fundraising events. To keep the garden growing, parents and community members meet one Saturday a month and tend to the garden maintenance.

Grant’s Gecko Garden is an “outdoor laboratory” funded by the Parent Teacher Association (PTA) with oversight from the science lab coordinator and assisted by dedicated teachers, parent room parent representatives and volunteers.

The goal of Gecko Garden is to provide students with a hands-on, standards based curriculum in a school-wide project that connects students with their environment and promotes good nutrition. For years, the garden has been a source of enjoyment for all grade levels as well as being an integral part of the Mission Hills Garden Club’s annual May garden tour.
