Safety first! For their daily commitment to school safety and discipline, an intrepid group of Hancock Elementary School fifth graders was recently awarded the title of Top School Safety Patrol in San Diego County for 2019.

The program was established in 1935 by the San Diego Police Department to assist elementary school children across uncontrolled intersections on their way to and from school and to reduce the number of pedestrian and bicycle collisions involving elementary age students.

The program is in nearly 90 schools throughout the city and is made up of nearly 2,000 fifth and sixth grade students. This year’s School Safety Patrol at Hancock is facilitated by fifth grade teacher Amanda Shelton and parents Mr. and Mrs. Birthelmer.

Jeff Zevely from News 8 recently visited the school to follow up and get an inside look. “Military kids move around a lot but it's safe to say they've found a home at Hancock,” he wrote. Be sure to check out the full story here!
