Annual camping trip a treat for Central Elementary students

Posted: Wednesday, July 18th 2018

The year is just not complete until select third graders from Central Elementary School in City Heights attend their annual camping trip.

This year, more than 80 students got the chance to experience an overnight camping trip at Stelzer County Park, thanks to the Jarrett Meeker Foundation. In addition to experiencing the fun of camping, students learned about Kumeyaay Indian history, storytelling, artifacts and games; saw a presentation on birds of prey and dissected owl pellets. They also learned about native plants and composting.

This is the 12th year that Central Elementary students have had this opportunity. For many, it's the first time camping or being away from home.

The Jarrett Meeker Foundation is a local non-profit organization that provides programs related to wildlife, conservation and the environment for children and young adults in San Diego County.

KUSI’s Dave Scott joined the students briefly to talk with them about their experiences.
