SCPA, students shine at Ben Vereen Awards

The San Diego School of Creative and Performing Arts, and one of its students, Jazley Genovese, were award winners at the 2016 Ben Vereen Awards, which selects the best of high school musical theater in San Diego county.

Genovese was selected as Best Actress, while SCPA's production of Chicago was the Best School Performance Winner.

Genovese, along with Cameron Chang from the Canyon Crest Academy in the San Dieguito High School District, will advance to the June 27 Jimmy Awards (National High School Musical Theatre Awards) at the Minskoff Theatre in New York City.

The awards, held May 29, were hosted by Vereen and CBS 8's Marcella Lee. Vereen performed during the show, as did the students.

Runners-up included Sam Brogadir of SCPA and Lindsey Czyzewicz of Scripps Ranch High School.

The Mission of the Ben Vereen Awards San Diego Competition is to utilize a competitive Tony Awards style adjudication process, to find the very best of high school musical theater talent in San Diego County; and in collaboration with the National High School Musical Theatre Awards, to present these talented young performers with a unique scholarship opportunity to advance their educations and careers in the genre of musical theater.

  • High School Theater Department Video Essay: La Jolla High School.

Nominees from the San Diego Unified School District

  • Best Actor: Adam Trubitt, Scripps Ranch High School; Samuel Brogadir, SD School of Creative and Performing Arts; Seann Altman, SD School of Creative and Performing Arts.
  • Best Actress: Anna Machuca, Clairemont High School; Linsey Cryzewicz, Scripps Ranch High School.
