Unified in Pride: Join the San Diego Unified marching contingent in the SD Pride Parade

In the summer of 1993, a small group of educators came together to form the first-ever school marching contingent in the San Diego Pride Parade. They met with little fanfare, carrying a banner that read, “A Closet Is No Place To Teach,” taking the first steps in a march that would grow into a vibrant annual tradition.

26 years later, several members of that first intrepid group will be carrying their original banner in the Pride Parade this Saturday. While there will be some familiar faces, much has changed since that first march.

These days, the San Diego Unified marching contingent is truly a sight to see. Nearly 100 students, employees, and family members will march alongside a bright yellow school bus, festooned with colorful banners and messages of positivity. If that’s not enough to stand out amongst the thousands of fellow parade-goers, one can look for the matching shirts emblazoned with the district’s message of inclusion: “Unified in Pride.”

Want to show off your Pride with the San Diego Unified family this Saturday? Here are the details:

  • San Diego Unified is contingent 69B
  • The meeting location is at the “F” seen on the map below, at the intersection of Lincoln Avenue and Normal Street. If in doubt, look for the big yellow school bus!
  • Students should arrive around 9:00 am to create banners & posters to carry in the parade.
  • Adult volunteers should also arrive at 9:00 am to assist in the supervision of students.
  • For those simply interested in the walking portion, the group will be lining up around 9:45-10:00 am, with a “start moving” time of approximately 11:00 am.
  • Group photo will be taken at approximately 9:50 am.
  • Don’t forget water, sunscreen, sunglasses, and comfy walking shoes!
