'Day of Compassion' honors principal, students, school police

Cherokee Point Elementary Principal Godwin Higa, students Maya Bentley and Zoey Serebriany, along with Chief Rueben Littlejohn and Officer John Serrano of the San Diego Unified School District Police Department, were honored at the fourth annual Day of Compassion.

The event, which featured a performance from the Hoover High School Jazz Band and Chamber Orchestra, brought community members together to promote, teach and demonstrate compassion.

SCPA, students shine at Ben Vereen Awards

The San Diego School of Creative and Performing Arts, and one of its students, Jazley Genovese, were award winners at the 2016 Ben Vereen Awards, which selects the best of high school musical theater in San Diego county.

Genovese was selected as Best Actress, while SCPA's production of Chicago was the Best School Performance Winner.

Genovese, along with Cameron Chang from the Canyon Crest Academy in the San Dieguito High School District, will advance to the June 27 Jimmy Awards (National High School Musical Theatre Awards) at the Minskoff Theatre in New York City.

Students, teachers awarded by College Career program, actor Nick Cannon

An aquaponics automation project, reducing plastic-disposal at a high school and business plans for acrophonics are among creations awarded by the College, Career and Technical Education Program (CCTE), and actor Nick Cannon, for the 2015-16 school year.

Cannon, a San Diego native and host of NBC-TV's America's Got Talent, awarded three student teams as part of his America's Teen Mogul Competition.

'Salute to Excellence' honors top Class of '16 grads

The top one percent of San Diego Unified's Class of 2016—more than 75 students—were honored during the district's 10th annual Salute to Excellence.

Each of the students, including all high school valedictorians, were presented by their school's principal or another administrator and received certificates and medals noting their achievement during the event held at Sea World San Diego. Some of these students are the first in their families to go to college.

Ford dealers' scholarships go to Class of '16 students

San Diego County Ford dealers gave $1,000 scholarships to 27 San Diego Unified students from 11 schools as part of their annual Salute to Education Scholarships program.

Graduating seniors from Crawford, Hoover, La Jolla, Madison, Morse, Mission Bay, Patrick Henry, Point Loma, San Diego High, Scripps Ranch and University City high schools received the scholarships for their upcoming work at a college or university, part of a program that gives out 150 scholarships to San Diego County high school seniors every year.

SCPA Jazz Ensemble picked for Essentially Ellington at NY's Jazz at Lincoln Center

New York, the Jazz Ensemble from the San Diego School of Creative and Performing Arts will be seeing you soon.

The SCPA musicians are the only band from California in this year's competition, which includes 14 other high school and youth jazz bands from around the nation. The students will be at Lincoln Center in New York City May 5-7 for the 21st Annual Essentially Ellington Competition and Festival.

UC High sophomore is one of nation's top Rubik's Cube solvers

University City High School Sophomore Henry Helmuth competes in Rubik’s Cube competitions and is one of the top-ranked solvers in the country.

Helmuth first started solving Rubik’s Cube a few years ago.

“Back in middle school, a friend brought one to school and I was interested in learning how to solve it and wanted to get a faster time than him,” said Helmuth.

Helmuth soon began competing after his first few experiences with the Rubik’s Cube.
