Signing day 2016

The first official step on the road to a university education was taken by 30 student-athletes as they signed letters-of-intent with colleges and universities around the nation in a ceremony at the San Diego Hall of Champions.

The first day that high school athletes in fall sports can sign the NCAA Letter of Intent was Feb. 3 and student-athletes in sports that included football, girls soccer, field hockey, boys soccer and softball.

"Academic standards and athletic standards are very high for these kids, not only in high school, but to be accepted to these universities," said said Scott Giusti, San Diego Unified Director of Athletics. "We're all very proud of their accomplisments; they also should be very proud of their accomplisments. Very few individuals receive athletic scholarships."

Aide to the students can range from all-expenses college education, to financial help. The students have been accepted to universities that include Washington State, Oklahoma Wesleyan, Jacksonville, South Dakota and Hawaii Hilo.

"The excellent programs at our comprehensive high schools provide a path to college for many students," said Giusti. "Not only do our coaches and athletic department staff members help our kids achieve athletic excellence, but they work on ensuring these individuals become productive adults."

The Hall of Champions provided the following list of students and also has event photos.
