SDUSD Stories: La Jolla HS Senior Sakura Roberson

La Jolla High senior Sakura Roberson has been named the 2017 CIF San Diego Section Track Athlete of the Year – but she’s not stopping anytime soon. This fall, Sakura will be attending San Diego State University with a full ride track scholarship.

During the 2016-17 school year, Sakura tore up the track in multiple events, including a blistering 2:09.38 in the 800 meter sprint – a school record and one of the top ten fastest times in San Diego County history. She was one of only a few athletes that competed in three events at the state level and earned a medal in the open 800 meters (5th in state).  Both of these relay teams also finished 13th in state.

For Sakura, success on the track is a family affair – her younger sister Sierra, a junior next year, is also a member of La Jolla’s track & field team. Their older sister Deyna, a former 400-meter hurdle conference champion at UCSD and San Diego State, is an assistant coach at LJHS herself. The sisters were featured earlier this year in an article by the San Diego Union-Tribune.

Other notable accomplishments from Sakura’s season at La Jolla included being named Eastern League Female Track Athlete of the Year.  She was a league champion (Eastern league) in the 800 meters and as a member of the 4x100 and 4x400 meter relays. We wish her the best at SDSU in all of her college endeavors, both academic and athletic.
