New York, the Jazz Ensemble from the San Diego School of Creative and Performing Arts will be seeing you soon.

The SCPA musicians are the only band from California in this year's competition, which includes 14 other high school and youth jazz bands from around the nation. The students will be at Lincoln Center in New York City May 5-7 for the 21st Annual Essentially Ellington Competition and Festival.

Each band receives an in-school workshop led by a professional musician, with Vincent Gardner, trombonist with the Jazz a Lincoln Center Orchestra visiting SCPA on April 5. The three-day festival allows students, teachers and musicians from across North America to participate in workshops, rehearsals and performances, concluding with an evening concert and awards ceremony featuring the three top-placing bands. The show closes with the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra with Wynton Marsalis performing music from the following year’s Essentially Ellington curriculum.

The other finalists are: Beloit Memorial High School (Beloit, WI); Byron Center High School (Byron Center, MI); Crescent Super Band (American Fork, UT); Foxboro High School (Foxboro, MA); Garfield High School (Seattle, WA); Jazz House Kids (Montclair, NJ); Lexington High School (Lexington, MA); Mount Si High School (Snoqualmie, WA); New World School of the Arts (Miami, FL); Triangle Youth Jazz Ensemble (Raleigh, NC); Roosevelt High School (Seattle, WA); Sun Prairie High School (Sun Prairie, WI); Tucson Jazz Institute (Tucson, AZ); University High School (Orange City, FL).
