Parents take action: Event aims to connect volunteers with schools faster than ever

For those looking to make a lasting positive impact in their community, it may now be easier than ever.

The success of San Diego as a city depends on the success of its students – and there is no better way to guarantee that success than to get involved at your neighborhood school.

When parents volunteer at their child’s school, the rewards are immense and tangible, and include benefits such as higher graduation rates, higher test scores, and lower rates of childhood depression.

Sadly, the opposite seems to be happening in many American cities. “Fewer parents are volunteering at their children’s schools, just as new research reveals it yields broader benefits for students than previously believed,” the Wall Street Journal reports. This doesn’t have to be the case in San Diego.

On Tuesday, October 29th, San Diego Unified is hosting a one-stop shop for parents, family members, and other members of the community looking to make a difference in their schools. This fun, free resource fair also has a spooky surprise that families won’t want to miss.

San Diego Unified’s Family Engagement Department will be welcoming prospective volunteers to “Parents are our Partners,” a resource fair to equip volunteers with the knowledge they need to effectively contribute to student success in their schools.

This free event takes place at the Education Center from 3:30 to 4:45 p.m. and will include everything needed to get started:

  • Volunteering opportunities and information
  • Application Support
  • TB testing on the spot
  • FREE holiday costumes for kids
  • Light refreshments
  • Live student performances
  • Information on District Advisory Committees

“Volunteers play such an important role in the student success,” said Program Manager Pamela King. “This event aims to attract people who are interested in becoming volunteers, but who may not know where to start.”

District staff will provide one-on-one application assistance to parents and community members looking to volunteer at their neighborhood school. Additionally, several district departments will have booths available with information on a variety of free parent resources.
