Leaders from the University of California system had come to their campus in Southeast San Diego to engage students directly and help demystify the college admissions process. Schools earn cash awards for sustainability efforts in EDCO Recycling Challenge

For the fifth consecutive year, the district’s contract with EDCO Disposal Corporation for districtwide waste and recyclables collection services provides an opportunity to reward schools for their commitment to sustainability through participation in the annual EDCO Recycling Challenge.  The goal of the Challenge is to reduce waste and increase recycling in district schools, to encourage environmental stewardship, curb costs, and facilitate compliance with State and local waste diversion laws.

‘Brotherhood’ at Hoover High helps African American male students succeed

The "Brothers of Excellence" program, started by school staff specifically for African American male students at Hoover High School, was featured by KPBS this week:

Every Wednesday around two dozen students meet during lunchtime and hear from a local African American leader in the community. At a recent meeting, James Williams, a Navy veteran, joined the group to talk about his life and joining the military. Williams says he spent years of his childhood homeless, dropped out of school and joined a gang.

Each year, the second week of April is dedicated as National Public Safety Telecommunications Week (Diapatcher Appreciation Week). Emergency communications centers across the country will be celebrating the professionals through a variety of ways.

Our School Police Services dispatchers are the first people you talk to when you call with a crisis.  Even though dispatchers can't see what's happening, they are the eyes and ears of our first responders-our guiding angels, who ensure that first responders get to an emergency as fast as possible.

From making peanut butter and jelly sandwiches for the homeless, to collecting school supplies for those affected by Hurricane Florence, Bird Rock Elementary students are having an inspirational impact on the world around them.

Pre-K For All resource fair Saturday, April 6th offers free tax prep, preschool enrollment

San Diego Unified has partnered with United Way of San Diego County and Dreams for Change to host a resource fair for families offering onsite preschool enrollment and free tax preparation.

Parents can bring their information and get taxes filed for free, while also learning about the free preschool options available in San Diego.

Onsite childcare and refreshments will be provided. In addition, Feeding San Diego will be providing pallets of fruits and vegetables.
