District teachers named San Diego County Teacher of the Year, Finalist

Morse High School’s Shirley Miranda was named one of five County Teachers of the Year and Mary Lou Baranowski of Lindbergh Schweitzer Elementary was recognized as a finalist at the 25th Annual Salute to Teachers event hosted by the San Diego County Office of Education and Cox Communications.

Baranowski, physical education teacher at Lindbergh Schweitzer Elementary, was recognized as a finalist. Of the 44 teachers nominated, 10 finalists were selected. Five of those 10 were named County Teacher of the Year. 

Miranda and Baranowski were among five San Diego Unified District Teachers of the Year eligible for the county honor. Other nominees included Michelle Yepiz from Zamorano Fine Arts Academy, Brenda Mueller from DePortola Middle and Ron Lancia from Mission Bay High. 

Along with Miranda, the following individuals were named 2015-16 County Teachers of the Year: Doug Green, Carlsbad High School; Armando Leon, Mar Vista Academy; Paul Messerle, Rancho Bernardo High; and Janet Ratkovic Feilen, Sevick School. These five individuals will represent San Diego County in the California Teacher of the Year program. The state winner will be announced later this year.

There were a total of 44 teachers nominated for 2015-16 County Teacher of the Year honors out of approximately 26,000 current teachers in the region. Finalists were selected based on student achievement, teaching philosophy, familiarity with current issues in education, and community involvement.

Miranda and Baranowski join a distinguished list of San Diego Unified teachers to be recognized at the County level. Last year, Wilson Middle School’s Khamphet Pease was named County Teacher of the Year and Ken Herschman of Crawford High School was named a finalist

The 25th Annual Salute to Teachers is an Oscars-style black-tie event that honors the teaching profession. Student groups from across San Diego County provided entertainment during the live television broadcast, including the Ukulele Choir from Burbank Elementary, the region’s only Turnaround Arts school.

Oct. 17 at 7 p.m.
Oct. 23 at 8 p.m.

The telecast will also replay on ITV Channel 16 on:

Oct. 18 at 5:30 p.m.
Oct. 24 at 5 p.m.
Oct. 25 at 2 p.m.
Nov. 11 at 2 p.m.

It will also air on KUSI Channel 9 on Oct. 24 at 8 p.m.
