Crown Point Junior Music Academy celebrates visit by John Lennon bus

Students created a video and adults talked about the importance of music education during two-day visit of the John Lennon Educational Tour Bus and members of the National Association of Music Manufacturers (NAMM) Foundation.

A state-of-the-art mobile audio and HD video recording and production facility, all on a bus, spent Feb. 1-2 at the Pacific Beach school. With the assistance of three on-board engineers, students learned how to write, perform, record, and produce original songs, produce and shoot music videos and documentaries, and complete a broadcast-quality music video.

Two Grammy nominations go to SCPA grad

She was Cassandra Batie when she attended and graduated in 2002 from the San Diego School of Creative and Performing Arts (SCPA).

Now she's singer/songwriter Andra Day and she ended 2015 with an appearance at the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade and two 2016 Grammy nominations. Read more from W Magazine.

Mira Mesa High Sapphire Sound performs for world at Rose Parade

The Sapphire Sound band and color guard from Mira Mesa High School thrilled an estimated 100 million people watching on television around the world and more than a million people lining the parade route in Pasadena in its appearance at the 2016 Tournament of Roses Parade.

The band and color guard had spent more than two years preparing for the event, marching 5½ miles and performing on TV for about three minutes. Read more from the Tournament of Roses.

SCPA drummer taking his sticks to New York City

Johnny Steele, a tenth-grade drummer at the San Diego School of Creative and Performing Arts (SCPA), has been named a 2016 National YoungArts Foundation Merit winner in Jazz/Percussion.

Steele, who says he has been a drummer “as long as I can remember,” will join other YoungArts Winners in the visual, literary, performing and design arts this April at YoungArts New York, a week-long intensive and work with masters in their field. These talented young artists present their work through public performances and exhibitions at Baryshnikov Arts Center, New York Live Arts and MoMA PS1.

$3,000 House of Blues Grant Moves Drum Line at San Diego High

New percussion instruments and musical resources will allow more students the chance to participate in San Diego High School's drum line program, thanks to a $3,000 grant from the House of Blues Music Forward Foundation.

The new, quality instruments will help propel them forward since many of the instruments the students are using are around 15 years old — as old as some of the students.
