The San Diego Unified School District has transformed its halls into an art gallery for the next few weeks for its annual Student Art Exhibit. A diverse array of 640 artwork pieces by students in grades TK-12 are on display through April 12 from 12 high schools, 10 middle schools, 1 K-8 school, and 26 elementary schools.

Student-made "Birds without Paradise" soar above Liberty Station and across U.S.-Mexico border

Students benefit from education in the arts, and special art projects can connect them to the larger community and to other cultures. While discussion of the U.S.-Mexico border is dominating the national dialogue, students from seven San Diego Unified School District schools have metaphorically spanned that border with their art in a unique binational art project.

Last weekend, dozens of local schoolchildren and their families gathered just before sunset in Liberty Station’s fountain courtyard to see the installation of “the birds.”

SDUSD Stories: Rising star SCPA student Sky Frank

Earlier this year, San Diego School of Creative and Performing Arts theatre student Sky Frank made local headlines for winning Best Actor at the 2017 Ben Vereen Awards. Since then, Sky’s star has only continued to rise: On June 26th, he was recognized as one of the nation’s top young actors at the National High School Musical Theatre Awards on Broadway, taking home the “Rising Star” award.

SCPA, students shine at Ben Vereen Awards

The San Diego School of Creative and Performing Arts, and one of its students, Jazley Genovese, were award winners at the 2016 Ben Vereen Awards, which selects the best of high school musical theater in San Diego county.

Genovese was selected as Best Actress, while SCPA's production of Chicago was the Best School Performance Winner.

Genovese, along with Cameron Chang from the Canyon Crest Academy in the San Dieguito High School District, will advance to the June 27 Jimmy Awards (National High School Musical Theatre Awards) at the Minskoff Theatre in New York City.

Burbank Elementary, fan Jason Mraz featured in White House video

Burbank Elementary and one of its biggest fans, popular singer Jason Mraz, were one of the featured schools in the Turnaround Arts Talent Show, hosted by First Lady Michelle Obama at the White House.

The music video featured students from Burbank Elementary singing and dancing alongside Mraz, their artist mentor. This new rendition of “Everyday People” by Sly and the Family Stone produced by Playing For Change makes the case that all children deserve to experience the power of the arts and music in school.

Under the direction of teacher Richard Opina, the budding musicians from this South Bay Terraces neighborhood school show their talents to the Board of Education and audience members.
