SCPA drummer taking his sticks to New York City

Johnny Steele, a tenth-grade drummer at the San Diego School of Creative and Performing Arts (SCPA), has been named a 2016 National YoungArts Foundation Merit winner in Jazz/Percussion.

Steele, who says he has been a drummer “as long as I can remember,” will join other YoungArts Winners in the visual, literary, performing and design arts this April at YoungArts New York, a week-long intensive and work with masters in their field. These talented young artists present their work through public performances and exhibitions at Baryshnikov Arts Center, New York Live Arts and MoMA PS1.

Mt. Everest Academy student awarded national prize for science-calculation app

Sebastian Mellen, a ninth-grade student at Mt. Everest Academy in Clairemont, has been awarded the Marconi/Samueli Award for Innovation for his vision and promise as an innovator who, in the spirit of radio inventor Guglielmo Marconi, demonstrated aptitude and skill in technical and mathematical concepts both with his science fair project and throughout team challenges.

Mellen received a $10,000 grant for "MathSuite: An Innovative Android App that Makes Dreaded Calculations FUN!." The app has been published on the Google Play app store.
