Madison High wins 2-AA state football championship

As Madison High players ran wildly and deliriously in all directions around the Sacramento State football field on Friday night celebrating a CIF state championship Division 2-AA bowl victory, junior receiver Jake Pelot rested on his back by himself near the 30-yard line, his hands holding his head as if he couldn’t believe what had just happened. Nearly 30 students at Porter Elementary gathered on the school’s blacktop waiting for members of the San Diego Unified School Police Department to finish “shining their shoes.” What these officers were really doing was grabbing a new bicycle that each of these students was receiving – and delivering it to them, helmet and all.

Blossoming into a sustainable school garden

The school garden at Sherman Elementary School is nothing short of an oasis.  There are butterflies and fruit trees, moist soil and vibrant flowers, and thriving vegetable plants.  This little lot full of blooming life stands distinct among the surrounding limited healthy food options that students must navigate when not at school.

While in the garden, students get to “learn about gardening, eat fresh food, and appreciate the natural environment,” says school garden coordinator Christina Abuelo.

Signing Day marks big step for high school athletes

Fall is an exciting time for many high school senior athletes. Not only are they starting their final year of high school, but many are signing letters of intent to play sports on a scholarship next fall at colleges and universities across the country. Many district athletes that have signed letters of intent to play their sport in college participated in the College Announcement & Signing Party event hosted recently by the San Diego Hall of Champions.
