Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater San Diego (BGCGSD) Club member Issac Guerrero has been named the San Diegan recipient of the $100,000 scholarship program, presented by Beyoncé Knowles-Carter and Shawn “JAY-Z” Carter. The scholarship program awards one exceptional senior high school student, with financial needs, 100K to put towards their enrollment in a college or university.

Edison, Kimbrough and Rowan named three of nation’s healthiest schools

The Alliance for a Healthier Generation released its list of “America’s Healthiest Schools” and three district schools – Edison, Kimbrough and Rowan – received the Bronze level award for their efforts to encourage students to promote healthy eating and physical activity. The three elementary schools were among a record 461 schools from 26 states that were recognized.

Blossoming into a sustainable school garden

The school garden at Sherman Elementary School is nothing short of an oasis.  There are butterflies and fruit trees, moist soil and vibrant flowers, and thriving vegetable plants.  This little lot full of blooming life stands distinct among the surrounding limited healthy food options that students must navigate when not at school.

While in the garden, students get to “learn about gardening, eat fresh food, and appreciate the natural environment,” says school garden coordinator Christina Abuelo.

SD High seniors encouraged to register, vote

California's Secretary of State, Alex Padilla, encouraged more than 250 seniors at San Diego High School to help shape the future by registering to vote.

The state's first Latino Secretary of State, Padilla was in San Diego to kick off a statewide effort to encourage students to register to vote when they turn 18. San Diego County Registrar of Voters officials were also on hand April 18 so students could register.
