Burbank Elementary, fan Jason Mraz featured in White House video

Burbank Elementary and one of its biggest fans, popular singer Jason Mraz, were one of the featured schools in the Turnaround Arts Talent Show, hosted by First Lady Michelle Obama at the White House.

The music video featured students from Burbank Elementary singing and dancing alongside Mraz, their artist mentor. This new rendition of “Everyday People” by Sly and the Family Stone produced by Playing For Change makes the case that all children deserve to experience the power of the arts and music in school.

Miramar Ranch school garden comes back to life

Next to a soccer field in the heart of San Diego's Scripps Ranch neighborhood grows a beautiful garden at Miramar Ranch Elementary School. About two years ago, the garden program began to bud due to the hard work of dedicated parents Jennifer Leader, Eric Morgan, and Mike and Somer Gates. Prior to this, the garden had lay fallow for ten years.

Spring Fun Café Brings Free Lunch to Students on Spring Break

San Diego children on Spring Break have multiple opportunities to have free lunches as Spring Fun Café begins a four-week run on Monday, March 28. Lunch is free to kids age 18 and younger at 10 locations throughout the City of San Diego. No application or proof of income is needed to participate.

This program is a collaboration between the San Diego Unified Food and Nutrition Services Department and the City of San Diego Park and Recreation Department, and other community organizations, such as libraries, YMCA centers and military child and youth centers.

SCPA Jazz Ensemble picked for Essentially Ellington at NY's Jazz at Lincoln Center

New York, the Jazz Ensemble from the San Diego School of Creative and Performing Arts will be seeing you soon.

The SCPA musicians are the only band from California in this year's competition, which includes 14 other high school and youth jazz bands from around the nation. The students will be at Lincoln Center in New York City May 5-7 for the 21st Annual Essentially Ellington Competition and Festival.

Wilson Middle School future oceanographers kick off SeaWorld program

Future oceanographers from Wilson Middle School in City Heights have helped San Diego Unified, SeaWorld San Diego and the San Diego Workforce Partnership kick off a new program that will bring students to the Mission Bay Park attraction to study and explore the planet's oceans.

The Ocean Link Lab started with 30 students from Wilson, who are exploring possible career paths, and is scheduled to expand to more schools this fall.
