Mira Mesa High Sapphire Sound performs for world at Rose Parade

The Sapphire Sound band and color guard from Mira Mesa High School thrilled an estimated 100 million people watching on television around the world and more than a million people lining the parade route in Pasadena in its appearance at the 2016 Tournament of Roses Parade.

The band and color guard had spent more than two years preparing for the event, marching 5½ miles and performing on TV for about three minutes. Read more from the Tournament of Roses.

Signing Day sends student-athletes to college careers

Student-athletes took their first step on the road to a university education on National Signing Day, as 27 students from a dozen San Diego Unified high schools participated in the San Diego Hall of Champions National Signing Day celebration.

The annual event invites students who have received offers from universities around the nation to sign their NCAA Letter of Intent on the first day possible, which in 2015 was Nov. 11.

Athlete Ally program visits Mira Mesa High School

Before a packed house in the gym, Athlete Ally a nonprofit organization that provides public awareness campaigns, educational programming and tools and resources to foster inclusive sports communities, brought its message to Mira Mesa High School.

The organization works with collegiate, professional and Olympic sports who work to foster “allyship” in their athletic environments. The programs include Ambassadors from over 80 colleges and over 100 professional athletes.

School dedication honors Dr. Jonas Salk at his namesake campus

Dr. Peter Salk, son of Dr. Jonas Salk, Cindy Marten, superintendent of San Diego Unified School District, and Deidre Hardson, principal of Jonas Salk Elementary School, joined students, parents and community members as they marked the official dedication this morning of the new Jonas Salk Elementary School in San Diego's Mira Mesa neighborhood. The event also culminates year-long celebrations marking the 100th birthday of the school's namesake, Dr. Jonas Salk.

Mira Mesa students learn about character and goal setting from Harlem Globetrotter alum Tyrone Brown

Basketball spinning, handling and overall wizardry are what you would expect from the Harlem Globetrotter legend Tyrone “Hollywood” Brown.

Brown delivered on the entertainment, but also delivered several important messages to Mira Mesa students about character and goal setting. He spent the week visiting each Mira Mesa school, conveying to students the importance of honesty and integrity and what it takes to achieve your goals.
