Four aspiring teachers receive $1,000 scholarships

Four district employees received Board President’s Scholarships in the amount of $1,000 to assist them in their efforts to become teachers. The scholarships are funded by California Coast Credit Union and Mission Federal Credit Union, who both contributed $2,000.

GradNation Summit draws hundreds

San Diego Unified is committed to helping all students graduate with the skills necessary to succeed in the 21st century.

As part of this effort, the district recently hosted a half-day workshop for English learners and their families focusing on strategies to ensure that at least 90 percent of our Class of 2020 English Learners graduate on time. Hundreds of students and family members turned out for the summit.

San Diego Unified was recently awarded the prestigious Achievement of Excellence in Procurement award from the National Procurement Institute, Inc. This is the seventh consecutive year that San Diego Unified has received this nationwide award, now in its 21st year. Twenty-three school districts nationally and 45 public-sector agencies in California received the institute's 2016 award.

SD high schoolers get crash course in personal finance

High school is a numbers game for so many students who plot their futures based on test scores or grade-point averages. But teenagers often tune out other high-stakes digits — credit rankings and interest rates among them — that could influence the quality of their adult lives. Starting this school year, every tenth-grader in the San Diego Unified School District — all 7,000 of them — will go through a sort of personal finance boot camp under a four-year collaboration with Junior Achievement.

District, Google partner to expand online collaboration

Google's 'education evangelist' Jaime Casap said it best. We should not be asking kids "what do you want to be when you grow up," we should be asking them "what kind of problem do you want to solve" and teach them the skills they need to solve those problems.
