San Diego Unified schools sending more than 13,000 computers home with students next year

Hosting the first of its occasional #FollowFriday Technology Days, School Board President Dr. Michael McQuary, and Trustees Kevin Beiser and Sharon Whitehurst-Payne joined San Diego Unified Superintendent Cindy Marten and Chief Innovation Officer Dan Stoneman to announce more than 13,000 students will get computers to take home for learning outside of school next fall. They made the announcement at Salk Elementary where the first class of kindergarteners completed their school year learning on computers at home and in the classroom.

SCPA, students shine at Ben Vereen Awards

The San Diego School of Creative and Performing Arts, and one of its students, Jazley Genovese, were award winners at the 2016 Ben Vereen Awards, which selects the best of high school musical theater in San Diego county.

Genovese was selected as Best Actress, while SCPA's production of Chicago was the Best School Performance Winner.

Genovese, along with Cameron Chang from the Canyon Crest Academy in the San Dieguito High School District, will advance to the June 27 Jimmy Awards (National High School Musical Theatre Awards) at the Minskoff Theatre in New York City.

Business group salutes 120 SD Unified Schools

The Educational Results Partnership and the Campaign for Business and Education Excellence partners with leaders in the business community in a shared mission to ensure all students are prepared to success in college and career, saluting 1,714 schools in California.

'Salute to Excellence' honors top Class of '16 grads

The top one percent of San Diego Unified's Class of 2016—more than 75 students—were honored during the district's 10th annual Salute to Excellence.

Each of the students, including all high school valedictorians, were presented by their school's principal or another administrator and received certificates and medals noting their achievement during the event held at Sea World San Diego. Some of these students are the first in their families to go to college.

Bell Middle orchestra entertains Board of Education

Bell Middle School's Advanced Orchestra performed before the Board of Education meeting on April 12, 2016. Under the direction of teacher Richard Opina, the budding musicians from this South Bay Terraces neighborhood school show their talents to the Board of Education and audience members. The Bell Middle School program is one of San Diego Unified's Visual and Performing Arts programs, which brings music education to schools throughout the district.

Nutrition lessons learned at Clark Middle School

Three seventh grade teachers at Clark Middle School are inspiring students and the City Heights community one nutrition lesson at a time.

For the past two years Janel Meehan, Linda Yale and Anna Bonitati have taught a unit called "Healthy Choices,” challenging their students to have a better understanding of what they are putting into their bodies. The students watch documentaries including “Fed Up” and “In Defense of Food,” and read numerous articles on health. The unit also aligns with the Common Core focus on nonfiction texts.

SCPA Jazz Ensemble picked for Essentially Ellington at NY's Jazz at Lincoln Center

New York, the Jazz Ensemble from the San Diego School of Creative and Performing Arts will be seeing you soon.

The SCPA musicians are the only band from California in this year's competition, which includes 14 other high school and youth jazz bands from around the nation. The students will be at Lincoln Center in New York City May 5-7 for the 21st Annual Essentially Ellington Competition and Festival.
