San Diego Unified schools sending more than 13,000 computers home with students next year

Hosting the first of its occasional #FollowFriday Technology Days, School Board President Dr. Michael McQuary, and Trustees Kevin Beiser and Sharon Whitehurst-Payne joined San Diego Unified Superintendent Cindy Marten and Chief Innovation Officer Dan Stoneman to announce more than 13,000 students will get computers to take home for learning outside of school next fall. They made the announcement at Salk Elementary where the first class of kindergarteners completed their school year learning on computers at home and in the classroom.

City Heights celebrates construction of new science education center

Superintendent Cindy Marten and Board Vice President Richard Barrera joined hundreds of City Heights residents and other dignitaries at a community “Construction Party” last Saturday to celebrate the construction of the new Living Lab, an education science center in City Heights. The Living Lab is a joint venture between San Diego Unified School District and Ocean Discovery Institute (ODI) of San Diego. The lab will be an educational facility where students are able explore different fields of science, as well as define their college and career aspirations.

Business group salutes 120 SD Unified Schools

Burbank Elementary, fan Jason Mraz featured in White House video

Burbank Elementary and one of its biggest fans, popular singer Jason Mraz, were one of the featured schools in the Turnaround Arts Talent Show, hosted by First Lady Michelle Obama at the White House.

The music video featured students from Burbank Elementary singing and dancing alongside Mraz, their artist mentor. This new rendition of “Everyday People” by Sly and the Family Stone produced by Playing For Change makes the case that all children deserve to experience the power of the arts and music in school.

'Salute to Excellence' honors top Class of '16 grads

The top one percent of San Diego Unified's Class of 2016—more than 75 students—were honored during the district's 10th annual Salute to Excellence.

Each of the students, including all high school valedictorians, were presented by their school's principal or another administrator and received certificates and medals noting their achievement during the event held at Sea World San Diego. Some of these students are the first in their families to go to college.

Central Elementary parents salute Superintendent for wellness efforts

Parents at Central Elementary School have saluted Superintendent Cindy Marten for her role in creating the school's wellness efforts while she was principal of the City Heights campus.

The establishment of the school's Central Elementary Wellness Council in 2011 was the start of an effort to improve the health of the students and community in all of the Hoover High School cluster — elementary and middle schools that feed students to Hoover High School — and the City Heights community.

Construction begins on new McKinley Elementary School Joint-use Park

Superintendent Cindy Marten, Board Trustee Richard Barrera and the City Councilmember Todd Gloria joined Principal Debra Ganderton, students, parents and community members at the ceremonial groundbreaking for the new McKinley Elementary School Joint-use Park in the North Park Community.  The May 9 event marked the beginning of construction on the new joint-use park that’s an approximately 1.34-acre site at McKinley Elementary School.
