San Diego Unified schools sending more than 13,000 computers home with students next year

Hosting the first of its occasional #FollowFriday Technology Days, School Board President Dr. Michael McQuary, and Trustees Kevin Beiser and Sharon Whitehurst-Payne joined San Diego Unified Superintendent Cindy Marten and Chief Innovation Officer Dan Stoneman to announce more than 13,000 students will get computers to take home for learning outside of school next fall. They made the announcement at Salk Elementary where the first class of kindergarteners completed their school year learning on computers at home and in the classroom.

Business group salutes 120 SD Unified Schools

A national business group that identifies top-performing schools has placed 120 of San Diego Unified's schools on its California Honor Roll lists.

The Educational Results Partnership and the Campaign for Business and Education Excellence partners with leaders in the business community in a shared mission to ensure all students are prepared to success in college and career, saluting 1,714 schools in California.

'Salute to Excellence' honors top Class of '16 grads

The top one percent of San Diego Unified's Class of 2016—more than 75 students—were honored during the district's 10th annual Salute to Excellence.

Each of the students, including all high school valedictorians, were presented by their school's principal or another administrator and received certificates and medals noting their achievement during the event held at Sea World San Diego. Some of these students are the first in their families to go to college.

State Associate Justice visits PB Middle to salute civics education

California Associate Justice Joan K. Irion visited Pacific Beach Middle School to honor the school's winning a 2016 California Civic Learning Award of Distinction.

Associate Justice Irion, from the Fourth District Court of Appeal, visited the school May 23 and learned about the International Baccalaureate World School’s community service projects and visited with the students.

Pacific Beach Middle was one of just six schools in California selected to receive the Award of Distinction, the second-highest honor for the Civic Learning Awards.

Sessions Elementary salutes military kids on 'Good Morning San Diego'

Sessions Elementary School in Pacific Beach hosted a live camera crew from KUSI-TV's "Good Morning San Diego" in honor of the Month of the Military Child. Many students at the school have parents/guardians in the US Navy, Marine Corps and other branches of the service.

Volunteers from San Diego's military community read to students and the school held a special breakfast for military families during.

"Good Morning San Diego" had live reports from the events.

Mission Bay High grad, Nobel laureate, meets with today's students

Years before he won the Nobel Prize for chemistry, Richard Schrock was a Pacific Beach kid with a chemistry set and a surfboard.

“That’s what I was doing at 15,” Schrock said to about 40 Mission Bay High School students Wednesday, as he described a chemistry experiment he conducted in his parents’ Grand Avenue home. “And I was also doing a little surfing.”
