Teacher of the Year ceremony highlights Teacher Appreciation Week

An elementary itinerant music teacher, a middle-school math and AVID teacher, and a high-school history teacher are San Diego Unified's 2016 Teachers of the Year.

The Board of Education celebrated Julie Szweda, Tara Jean and Jonathan Hash, as well as runners-up Allison Buell, Ebonee Weathers and Jennifer Roberts at Tuesday's Board of Education meeting, the annual Teacher of the Year ceremony. The event was held at Creative Performing Media Arts Middle School's new Performing Arts Center, 5050 Conrad Drive, San Diego, CA 92117.

State's Chief Justice visits Kumeyaay Elementary to honor civics education

California Chief Justice Tani G. Cantil-Sakauye said she was "inspired" by her visit to Kumeyaay Elementary School in Tierrasanta, one of three schools in the state to receive the Award of Excellence in California's Civics Learning Award Program.

Joining Cantil-Sakauye in a tour of the school were Superintendent Cindy Marten, County Supervisor Dave Roberts and other dignitaries.

Award goes to Lindbergh-Schweitzer Elementary special ed tech

Tracey Martinson, a special education technician at Lindbergh-Schweitzer Elementary School in Clairemont, has been recognized for her contribution to children by the Amgen Tour of California.

Martinson, a military wife and mother of two, is being saluted for her dedication to children and helping them focus on a healthy lifestyle.

$3,000 House of Blues Grant Moves Drum Line at San Diego High

New percussion instruments and musical resources will allow more students the chance to participate in San Diego High School's drum line program, thanks to a $3,000 grant from the House of Blues Music Forward Foundation.

The new, quality instruments will help propel them forward since many of the instruments the students are using are around 15 years old — as old as some of the students.
