WHAT: Montgomery Middle School will officially launch its new Genius Lab, a high-tech makerspace developed with support from Siemens. The new lab is outfitted with modern modular furniture, collaborative learning spaces, multiple 3-D printers, a Maker Bot Replicator, laser cutter, vinyl cutter, and other state-of-the-art computer equipment used in the tech field and throughout the STEAM industries.

San Diego journalists are invited to participate in the September Ed Talks, a casual forum hosted by the San Diego Unified School District in collaboration with the San Diego Press Club. The goal is to foster open and civilized conversations about public education.

Each forum will feature an educator, administrator, elected official or special guest, who will make opening remarks. Professional journalists will have an opportunity to ask questions and participate in on-the-record discussions.

Teacher, student being recognized by American Heart Association for student’s use of Hands-only CPR to save a life

WHAT: A former Golden Hill K-8 student recently used her Hands-only CPR training to save the life of a young relative. The student received training last year from her teacher at Golden Hill, Robin Carby. Carby is receiving an award from the American Heart Association for her efforts to teach this life-saving technique (the student has chosen to be recognized privately).

San Diego Unified announces its policy to serve nutritious meals every school day under the National School Lunch Program and School Breakfast Program. Effective July 1, 2018 through June 30, 2019, students are eligible for free or reduced-price meals if the household income is less than or equal to the federal guidelines.

In two separate events, select students from Rolando Park and Central elementary schools are receiving $100 gift cards to shop and purchase school supplies from Target, thanks to multiple grants from the store. Please see below for details.

San Diego Unified School District once again has the highest high school graduation rate -- and the lowest dropout rate -- among big-city school districts in California, according to results released today by the California Department of Education (CDE). The new results were released today at the same time as the state unveiled a new method for tracking graduation, a change they have adopted in response to a federal audit.
