September Is National Literacy Month!
What Is Literacy Month?
September is National Literacy Month, a time to celebrate the joy of reading and writing! As a family, you play an important role in helping your student grow as a reader and writer. Whether you’re enjoying a book, sharing family stories or writing a note together—in any language—these everyday moments build confidence, spark curiosity and nurture a love of learning.
Ways to Celebrate
- Read Together
Set aside time to enjoy books as a family—in any language! Read aloud, take turns reading or listen to an audiobook. Let children and teens choose topics they enjoy, and talk about what you’re reading. Ask, “What surprised you?” or “What did you learn?” Revisit favorite stories and let your children see you reading, too!
- Write Together
Make writing part of everyday life! Write grocery lists, leave encouraging notes, keep a family journal or create stories and comics. Younger children can draw and tell you their ideas while you write them down. Encourage older children and teens to write poems, song lyrics or reviews of favorite books and movies. Celebrate their ideas and invite them to share!
- Explore Together
Visit your local library, sign up for a library card, and explore books that reflect your family’s culture or introduce something new. Share family stories, play word games or try a recipe together. Invite children and teens to recommend a favorite book or research a topic they’re curious about. Turn everyday moments into opportunities to read, write and learn!
