All educational spaces in our schools are air conditioned, but during periods of high heat, schools follow Hot Weather Plans to help keep students and staff safe.
This may include:
- Modifying instructional activities and adjust schedules when necessary
- Limiting or rescheduling strenuous physical activities and recess
- Utilizing shaded and air-conditioned spaces as available
- Providing access to drinking water and encouraging hydration
- Monitoring students and staff for signs of heat-related illness
- Relocating students from non-air-conditioned areas when needed
Schools remain open as long as a safe learning environment can be provided. In rare cases, if extreme heat meets certain criteria, the district may declare a minimum day.
The district will monitor ongoing weather conditions and provide notification should a minimum day be declared due to extreme heat. Per AP 4032, a minimum day may be declared only if certain criteria are met, including forecasted temperatures of 95°F+ and a heat index of 103°F+, lasting more than a single day.
